ALLERGIES FAST FACT |
 |
Description
Allergic diseases affect more than 20 percent of people in the United States. Allergic rhinitis, also known as hay fever, is the most common allergy type, afflicting 15 percent of Americans. People with allergic rhinitis may be allergic to pollen, ragweed, dust, mold, animal dander or feathers. Allergies may be seasonal or may persist all year.
Between 1 to 2 percent of adults have food allergies, which occur when a person's immune system overreacts to an ordinarily harmless food. About 90 percent of all food allergies are caused by eight foods: milk, egg, wheat, peanut, soy, tree nuts, fish and shellfish.
Symptoms
- Sneezing
- Red, itchy, watery eyes
- Dry throat
- Stuffy nose
- Nasal discharge
- Hives, swelling of lips and face, difficulty breathing (food allergy only)

Risk Factors
Allergies can develop at any stage of life. However, people who are most susceptible include those who are under age 40 and already have an allergic condition such as asthma or dermatitis (an inflammatory skin condition) and those who have a close relative with allergies. Some allergies disappear with time while others recur at the same time each year and last for a few weeks or months. |

Prevention
Skin tests conducted by an allergist can determine the substance to which someone is allergic. Allergy to pollen can be minimized by staying indoors on days when pollen counts are high. On any given day, pollen counts are usually at their peak in the morning and drop throughout the day. People with allergies to dust and mold should keep their homes clean and as dust-free as possible to minimize symptoms.
For food allergies, strict avoidance is the best method of prevention. People with peanut or nut allergies should be especially vigilant since some products (especially candy) may contain small amounts of nut that are not listed among the ingredients. |

Treatment
Antihistamines, the mainstay of allergy treatment, are available over the counter and by prescription. These medications work by blocking the effects of histamines, the chemicals that cause many allergy symptoms. Some antihistamines can be sedating. Corticosteroid nasal sprays are often recommended to reduce nasal inflammation and the accompanying congestion, sneezing and runny nose. Another treatment option is a decongestant, which helps to dry up tissues in the nasal passages and reduce the swelling that causes nasal stuffiness.
If symptoms are severe or chronic, an allergist may suggest a series of allergy shots. Given regularly, these injections contain tiny amounts of the substance to which a person is allergic, and gradually desensitize the body to the offending allergens.
People with food allergies who have a severe reaction are generally treated with the drug epinephrine. |
